Network Application Installer (N.A.I.) offers an inexpensive way to completely
automate the installation of Windows applications on any network. With N.A.I.,
an end user can completely install OR REMOVE a Windows application with a click
of the mouse, making a breeze out of the configuration of new nodes or the
upgrading of applications on all nodes.
The end user program, NAI.EXE, reads the file WINAPPS.LST, which lists all
available applications. When a user selects an application for installation
or removal, NAI.EXE reads a .DAT file for that application (filename.DAT),
which instructs NAI.EXE what steps to take to install that application.
The LAN Administrator program, NAIMAINT.EXE, provides a quick, simple, user-
friendly means of maintaining WINAPPS.LST and all application .DAT files.
Included with N.A.I. are ten sample application .DAT files for popular
Windows applications. To get a quick look at the way NAI.EXE looks to the
user and the way NAIMAINT.EXE operates, place all the files in the same
directory and run the executables. (You will need to place the file
VBRUN100.DLL in your \WINDOWS directory--it has not been included in NAI.ZIP
because it would more than double the size of the .ZIP file, and it is widely
available by itself and with many other applications).
NOTE: The included sample application .DAT files, while valid and workable,
are provided as examples only. If you choose to use them in a production
environment, be advised that Aleph Systems makes no guarantees of their
accuracy or applicability.
In any case, please use NAIMAINT.EXE to examine the sample .DAT files carefully
and make any necessary changes before using them in your network. For example,
in the sample files, drive F: is used for all shared files located on the
server, and drive C: is used for all user- or node-specific files. You will
probably need to change this drive designation to the appropriate letter(s)
for your users, and you may also need to change the directories listed in the
sample files to match those on your file servers.
With NAIMAINT.EXE, you will find these changes quick and easy to make. You
will also find that creating new application .DAT files is also a quick and
easy process.
Please read the file NAI.WRI for complete instructions and explanations of
all files and file formats.
Thanks for trying N.A.I.
